Engineers and everyday-carry people are easy to buy for and hard to impress. They want objects that do one job well, say what they are made of, and are still in the pocket in five years. This list is twelve such objects, in three price bands, with a plain reason for each and an equally plain downside. Four of the twelve are ours. The other eight we do not sell and do not profit from; they are here because we carry them ourselves and because a gift guide with only our own products is an advertisement, not a guide. Prices are approximate list prices in October 2026 and move with sales and exchange rates.

How we chose

Three rules. The object has to be carried or used daily, not displayed. The maker has to publish what it is made of. And it has to be something a reasonable person would not buy for themselves because the cheap version exists, which is the whole point of a gift. Nothing on the list needs a subscription, an app or a proprietary refill, with one exception noted honestly below.

Under 50 euro or dollars

Fisher Space Pen Bullet

About 30 to 40 USD. A pressurised ballpoint that writes upside down, in the cold and on greasy paper. Closed it is 95mm and lives in a coin pocket. It has been in production since the 1960s and the refill is sold everywhere.

The honest downside: The cap-to-post design means it is two pieces, and people lose the cap. No clip unless you buy the clip version.

Casio F-91W

About 20 to 25 USD. The cheapest serious watch ever made: alarm, stopwatch, seven-year battery, 23 grams. Engineers like it precisely because there is nothing to admire except that it works.

The honest downside: The resin strap cracks after a few years and the light is dim. Both are cheap to replace.

Rite in the Rain pocket notebook

About 10 to 15 USD. Paper that takes a pencil or a Space Pen in the rain and does not turn to pulp. For anyone who sketches on site, in a workshop or on a boat.

The honest downside: Fountain pens and most gel inks bead on it. Pair it with the Space Pen or a pencil.

Victorinox Cadet Alox

About 40 USD. A single-layer Swiss Army knife with a blade, nail file, screwdriver and bottle opener, in ribbed aluminium scales. 45 grams, flat enough to forget.

The honest downside: No scissors and no tweezers, and the Alox scales scratch. Check local knife law before posting it abroad.

Anker Nano power bank (5,000 mAh, built-in USB-C)

About 25 to 35 USD. The built-in connector means no cable to forget. One phone charge, and it fits a shirt pocket.

The honest downside: One charge, not two. For a weekend away, step up a size.

Under 100

COLDFIRE RebelHex carbon fiber key fob

89 euro. A 9 gram carbon fibre key fob with two detachable titanium hex rings and kangaroo leather detailing. It keeps a full set of keys flat and quiet on one ring, and it is the smallest object we make from the same materials as the wallets, which makes it the cheapest way to give someone the material list without the price of the wallet.

The honest downside: It is a key fob. If the person already has one they like, they will not switch for a material.

Olight Baton 4

About 70 to 90 USD, more for the charging case edition. A 1,300 lumen rechargeable torch the size of a thumb, with a magnetic tail cap for working inside cabinets and under cars. The magnetic charging puck is the feature people end up loving.

The honest downside: Proprietary charger: lose the puck and it is a paperweight until the replacement arrives. Runtime at full output is short.

Peak Design Tech Pouch

About 60 USD. An origami-style organiser for cables, chargers, SD cards and a power bank. It stands open on a desk and closes to a brick. For anyone who travels with a laptop.

The honest downside: Heavier than a simple zip pouch, and the pockets are opinionated: if their cables do not fit the layout, they will not use it.

100 to 200

COLDFIRE Titan Black belt

129 euro. A 38mm belt cut from a single piece of 3.8 to 4.0mm Italian full-grain hide with a matte gunmetal pin buckle and no ratchet. The gift that is worn every day for a decade. Our belt guide explains why one-piece full-grain is the whole story.

The honest downside: You need their waist size, and the belt size is two inches above it. Ask, or give the size chart with the gift.

COLDFIRE StrikeForce titanium pen

140 euro. A carbon fibre body with a titanium cap, 124mm long, 11mm across and 22 grams, with two interchangeable heads: a tungsten tip and a ceramic bead for breaking glass in an emergency. Carried in a jacket pocket and used for signing, with the second head there for the one day it matters.

The honest downside: It looks tactical, which is not for everyone, and the interchangeable heads are a feature most owners set once and forget. If the person signs three things a year, give them the Space Pen instead.

Leatherman Wave+

About 120 to 140 USD. The multi-tool that defined the category. Pliers, replaceable wire cutters, two knife blades, saw, file, scissors, four drivers. If they own one tool, this is the one that is actually used.

The honest downside: 240 grams, so it lives in a bag or a belt sheath, not a pocket. Not legal to carry in some countries because of the locking blades.

COLDFIRE Flex One carbon fiber wallet

199 euro. A vertical front-pocket bifold in Carbitex flexible carbon fibre and K-Leather, 5.5mm closed, 46 grams, four cards and bills, RFID shielded, Dyneema-lined, titanium hardware, every material named with its maker. Gear43 named it Best Unique Bifold in its 2026 Bifold Wallet Awards. Five-year warranty.

The honest downside: Four card slots. Someone who carries nine cards needs the Strike Pro, not this. And it is not cheap, which is the point of putting it last.

Two things that are not on the list, and why

Plate wallets with elastic bands. Aluminium or carbon plate wallets held together by an elastic strap are popular EDC gifts. The plates last forever. The elastic does not, and when it goes the wallet is finished. If the person wants a plate wallet, buy the one with a replaceable strap and give them a spare.

Anything with a built-in battery as its only feature. Trackers, smart tags and app-connected gadgets are gifts that expire. The list above includes one rechargeable object (the torch) and one with a battery (the watch) because both keep working for years and both can be replaced for small money.

If you are buying from us

Every COLDFIRE product ships from Plovdiv, Bulgaria within 24 hours in a presentation box with a custom-fit cradle, material cards and a signed certificate, so it is gift-ready as it arrives. Within the European Union there is no customs. To the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, delivery is typically one to three weeks depending on the carrier, so for December order by the first week of the month. Everything carries a five-year warranty and a 30-day return window, and belts can be exchanged for size.

Not sure which wallet? The difference between the Flex (front pocket, vertical, 3 to 5 cards) and Strike (back pocket, traditional bifold, 6 to 8 cards) series is the pocket it lives in. Ask which one they use and you are done.

Gift questions, answered

What is a good gift for an engineer who has everything?

Something they use daily and would not buy for themselves because it costs more than the cheap version: a one-piece full-grain belt, a titanium pen, a wallet with named materials. The gift is the upgrade they could justify technically but not emotionally.

What does EDC mean?

Everyday carry: the small set of objects a person keeps on them every day. Typically a wallet, keys, a knife or multi-tool, a torch, a pen and a watch. The EDC community judges these objects on materials, weight and how long they last, not on brand.

Is a wallet a good gift?

Yes, if you know how many cards the person carries and which pocket they keep it in. Front-pocket people want a vertical slim wallet with four to six slots. Back-pocket people want a traditional bifold. Get that one fact right and the rest is detail.

Can I ship a knife or multi-tool as a gift internationally?

Often, but not always. Several countries restrict locking blades and some restrict blade length. Check the destination country's rules before you post. A pen, torch, wallet or belt has no such problem.

How do I give a belt as a gift without knowing the size?

Measure a belt they already wear, from the buckle fold to the hole they use, or ask their trouser waist and add two inches. COLDFIRE belts come in nine sizes from 32 to 48 inches and can be exchanged for a different size.
